Learn How To Get Rid Of Cold Sores

By Rachel Starks

Many people are familiar with the signs of cold sores. The most common signs are tingling, burning and itching of the area around the mouth and nose. These people know when a cold sore is about to break out at the first sign of irritation and are prepared to hide their mouth for the next couple of weeks. There are some that know how to get rid of cold sores and prevent them from getting bad.

The first thing you need to know is that a cold sore is caused by the herpes simplex virus. This virus will forever be in your body and it is highly contagious. You should not kiss or eat after anyone that has the signs of a cold sore.

When the cold sore starts, it often looks like a pimple on the mouth. Within a few days, it usually spreads into a mass of sores that are red and filled with pus. If it is touched by dirty hands and the hands are not washed, it can easily be spread to other parts of the body as well as other people.

Take the sterile approach to the sore. To relieve itching and burning use an antibacterial soap on the area around the sore. This will often help heal the sore as well as give you an outlet to scratching it. Use the soap with a very hot clean cloth to avoid putting even more germs into the area.

Another very important step to relieving the itch and pain while treating the sore is by using petroleum jelly or a pain relieving product, such as a topical solution like Neosporin. Before applying the jelly to the area, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly with an antibacterial soap and hot water to keep from infecting the sore even more.

To learn more about the contributing factors to a break out, do a little research on line or talk to your doctor.
