Proper Treatment For Coughs Is Important

By Kenny Huang

During common flu, you are generally afflicted with persistent cough and painful throat. These symptoms must not be neglected and one should seek medical advice without delay and get these treated accordingly.

Coughs happen because the defence mechanisms in the body propel them so as to clear the air passage in the throat which provides air to the lungs. They are not just an outcome of physiological complications but can also occur due to psychological reasons. Cough caused due to physical problems are normally either allergic in nature, caused by external pollutants or other influences, or a symptom of some ailment the person is suffering from. The latter is a habit of sneezing or coughing in a person without any definite physical reason, and it is called 'habitual coughing' or Streruphilia in medical parlance.

Cough can often be acute or chronic, and can have a typical characteristic which depends on the intensity and duration of coughing seizures. Acute coughs which goes on for not more than 3 weeks can be an offshoot of either infectious or non-infectious diseases. While conditions such as sinusitis or pneumonia result in acute coughing, chronic coughs are usually a result of problems like asthma and bronchitis.

Consulting a good physician is important to get to the underlying cause of the problem and taking appropriate treatment for complete recovery. Physicians prescribe many kinds of medicines to control the coughing symptoms and pain such as antibiotics, antihistamines and other suppressants. In some cases, especially chronic ailments, the cough treatment can last for long durations, even months, to fully cure or control the problem.

Like any other serious medical problem, taking necessary precautions to prevent cough attacks is better than having to seek treatment for it when the situation gets bad. Keeping away from smoking, exercising regularly and taking a balanced diet that builds immunity and makes one healthy can help prevent coughs.
