Can You Hear Well?

By Matthew Wright

Just how much do you know about your ears? Give this brief hearing quiz a shot: Chuck enjoys shooting and scuba diving, so is he smart for wearing sonic ear valves? For me and you, those would be ear plugs. Janet's old record player and transistor radio are on at full blast. When Janet's mother tells her she is ruining her hearing, is she correct? If Tom's ear wax builds up more than normal, is he helping his hearing by removing the wax often? If you answered "Yes" to the first question and "No" to the rest, your hearing IQ is fairly sharp.

Whereas teenagers experience awkward growth phases with their vocal chords, they do not experience a similar problem with their ears. However, abnormal change in pressure does have a negative effect on auditory functions. Proper methods of pressurized breathing should be learned before anyone goes scuba diving. If you are too close by, a gun or jet motor gust can hurt you. Although, irregardless of how annoying the electric guitar or record player is to your parents at full blast, it will be more likely to damage the teen's hearing instead of any classical music.

Ear wax that resides in the ear canal is actually not disruptive to auditory ability, a fact many physicians are trying to spread to their patients. Only the exterior portion of the ear should be cleaned of wax. Sticking a matchstick or bobby-pin into your ear could result in an infection or a punctured eardrum.

If you feel you have an issue with the wax in your ear, you should always go to a doctor or nurse who is trained to take care of your ears. Doctors advise against inserting any object with a point into your ear, such as toothpicks, hairpins, and matchsticks.

An increasing number of schools test the hearing of their students in order to understand and analyze personality issues. If you don't get a good score on this kind of test, you don't need to accept this score as your ultimate score. Many issues, including a recent head cold, allergy symptoms or even just basic inattentiveness and outside distractions can make a difference in a hearing evaluation Yes it's possible that a bad attitude might be creating your hearing issues, so take another hearing test to confirm this.

Swimming might be unwise if you are suffering from an infection in your ear, so ask your doctor. In those treatments which involve keeping the ear canal dry, you certainly don't want to introduce any sort of fluid. Talk to your doctor if you endure many earaches.

You might notice a temporary change in your hearing in the days after you get over a cold. This is normal, but see your doctor with questions if your hearing does not improve after a few days. The hearing loss could be as a result of fluids collecting inside the middle ear, which need to be removed by your doctor to prevent any permanent hearing loss.

Hearing loss is very common, and one out of every ten Americans has some degree of hearing loss. Most of them lead very normal lives. Your hearing is a wonderful gift. The tiny bones within your ear that make up the hearing mechanism allow us to hear beautiful music, or the soothing sounds of nature. If you are unsure of the proper way to clean and care for your ears, seek professional, medical advice. Those participating in sports or those who are suffering from head colds should be protective of their hearing. A doctor can also help those with hearing loss to more fully make use of their remaining hearing and enjoy life.
