Eliminate Debilitation from Sjorgren's Syndrome

By Bob Stevens

While most people are not familiar with Sjorgen's syndrome, this is a serious disease affecting more than 4 million people each year in the United States alone. The disease is an autoimmune disorder whereby the individual's body attacks the mucous membranes of the body-such as the eyes, mouth, and nasal passages. There is no cure at this time.

It is said that alternative treatments, when employed in conjunction with traditional medications, can bring the sufferers a better quality of life, but neither is a cure. All treatments, whether conventional or alternative, are focused on treating the condition by rehydrating the affected mucous membrane tissues, and on strengthening the immune system.

Women with Sjorgren's syndrome can experience vaginal dryness in addition to the dry mouth, eyes, and nasal passages associated with the disease in both genders. Eyes can also be sensitive to light. As a result of this dryness, people with Sjorgren's syndrome may have difficulty swallowing, speaking clearly, tasting food, or keeping their teeth healthy and free from cavities.

Dry skin, rashes, fatigue, and joint pain are also common. There are some medications that can assist with the dryness of the mouth and eyes; however, these medications are only effective for the duration they are being used. In other words, they must be reapplied frequently to maintain the moisturizing effect.

Additional alternative treatments are gaining in popularity. Such alternatives include homeopathy, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, and acupuncture. Some research suggests Willow Bark may relief mouth dryness-which helps with speaking, tasting, and reducing the formation of cavities-and Omega 3 fatty oil supplements may help alleviate dry eyes.

It can also be helpful to control the humidity in your home environment, by adding humidity or moisture to the air with a humidifier, drinking lots of liquids to alleviate dry mouth, and using lotions to hydrate skin. Vaginal creams can also be helpful for women affected by vaginal dryness.

It is also helpful to minimize drafts of air or breezes. Try not to use fans as they can dry out eyes, nasal passages, and the skin even faster. Use damp, warm compresses to help refresh eyes. Sleep with a mask. Take frequent breaks when doing bookwork. And utilize eye drops or eye moisturizers often.

Sjorgren's syndrome can have potentially debilitating and lasting effects if not properly treated. Corneal damage and tooth decay are just two of the potential problems you want to avoid. So work with your physician and also a dentist/dental surgeon or opthalmologist to get the care you need to stay as healthy as you can. Medications and treatment are available, and you want to use them if they provide you with relief from symptoms. You also want to learn about new and alternative treatments as they become available so you can continue to enjoy your life.
