A man who has recently been diagnosed with mesothelioma the 'asbestos cancer' has been telling people of the dangers that asbestos poses in a bid to make them more well known. 64 year old Maurice Jardin was just about to retire when he discovered he had the disease, which he is thought to have contracted in his workplace. He has now began campaigning to reach out to other people and his ex colleagues to highlight the dangers.
He received a six figure compensation settlement but it is thought that most of the money will go towards the cost of his treatments. "I'd give everything back just to be normal," he said about the compensation payout, adding that he just wanted people to truly recognise the danger of asbestos "I'd heard of it, but I was not aware of how bad it was," he admitted.
Mr Jardin was diagnosed with the asbestos related disease in June after he began getting terrible pains in his side. The news of the disease was a shock to Mr Jardin as he had only just retired having never had to take a day off work sick throughout his working life.
Mr Jardin's medical team consulted with a solicitor and it was soon found that the cause of the disease was due to Mr Jardin working in a factory which had an asbestos roof. In the 1990's a section of the roof was replaced and the renovations took three weeks to complete. Mr Jardin had the job of standing underneath to make sure other staff did not enter. Part of the roof caved in on one occasion and landed on the floor which then resulted in Mr Jardin having to clear up the mess and becoming covered in asbestos containing dust.
Due to the toxic dust on his clothing Mr Jardin's wife and daughter were also tested for mesothelioma as they had potentially come into contact with the dust themselves.
