By Mark Scott

A peptic or stomach ulcer is basically the condition of small holes forming in gastrointestinal tract and it can be up to 3/4 of an inch in size.

There are different types of ulcers that exist, and the most common one is duodenal. Duodenal is the ulcer of the intestine. This illness is not uncommon or rare, and is a dangerous one, as its severity usually increases with the passage of time.

Some of the major signs of stomach ulcers include that of nausea and vomiting, blood appearing in stool and vomit, black stool, loss in appetite which would eventually lead to a decrease in weight, swelling and fullness of the abdomen and sensations of burning in the stomach, which are at times confused with feelings of hunger.

The symptom that causes the most discomfort and fear among people is that of pain. It usually occurs in the upper abdomen or below the breast bone. At times it may be so severe that it would result in the person waking up at nights, for weeks and being unable to go back to sleep.

Disturbances in sleeping patterns and an overall loss of sleep is also a major symptom. Eating food and drinking milk are some ways of reducing pain for a short while.

Various causes may be responsible for developing stomach ulcers, which include its presence in the family history of the person who has acquired it. Moreover, a number of unhealthy behaviors may result to it, such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, not having an appropriate diet and other disorders being present earlier, for example; rheumatoid arthritis and emphysema.
