Addiction rehabs have helped many people who have developed problems with drug or alcohol dependence. Over time, drug addiction or alcoholism progresses and the amount of drugs or alcohol consumed goes up. This is the manifestation of an effect called tolerance; one needs to consume more over time to have the desired effect because your body gets used to the substances. Craving can also be developed as a consequence of prolonged and sustained drug or alcohol use. It may actually get to the point where person feels they "need" to have a drink or drug simply to get out of bed or to function.

Once an individual starts to experience the many negative consequences, both mentally and physically, they may make the choice to get into alcohol treatment. There are many different treatment methods that are used to treat this devastating disease. Each method is generally selected to meet the needs of an individual. The best person to reach out to initially is a relative or a very close friend. They can provide emotional support and you know they have your best interests at heart. It is extremely important speak directly and succinctly about the problem and not to beat around the bush. One tendency that family members have is to enable the behavior rather than confronted. If there is a problem, it must be dealt with.

If it is time to take action on a person's drug or alcohol addiction problem, one of the first steps is to seek a professional assessment by a competent specialist. Not all doctors are psychiatrists are specially trained in addiction. There are addiction medicine doctors, and substance abuse therapists that can offer the most professional and comprehensive opinions, assessments, and referrals. When it comes time to seeking actual treatment, a professional assessment is a must. Do not rely strictly on Yellow Pages or chance for selecting addiction rehabs.

Addiction recovery is an ongoing process if a person goes to alcohol treatment center treatment does not end with the end of the program. It simply moves into another phase. Remaining abstinent from drugs or alcohol is a lifelong process which requires constant attention and awareness. There is a whole set of skills to be learned in maintaining recovery and professional help is definitely recommended. It is also recommended to develop a strong social support network because experience shows that recovery is very difficult if not impossible to accomplish by yourself.
