Can Natural Medicine Be Used For Pain Relief?

By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski (ret. D.C.), M.S. Nutrition, M.H.

Pain relief solutions come from friends, family members, doctors, and acquaintances; all who seem to have the best solution. Some of their pain relief solutions include OTC and prescription medications and herbs/foods that decrease pain in different ways. These pain relief solutions are divided into two primary types: natural medicine and traditional medicine, but which ones work best?

It depends on what type of pain a person has and what type of medicine is chosen.

For example, let's say you have a toothache and go to the dentist who fixes the tooth. He fixed the original problem so the pain relief offered is complete and your pain never recurs. Now if you use natural medicine for the same situation, you may or may not find that it works. A natural medicine solution such as clove oil won't address the problem so it's possible that the pain relief won't last.

Chinese herbal combinations have been reported in scientific literature for decades on their ability to decrease pain and support the body enough to solve the problem. The Chinese have a philosophy of natural medicine that has been applied to patients with pain from many different sources. Their philosophy is based on natural medicine.

These Chinese natural medicines can work in a variety of ways. For example, if hot peppers are used, they interrupt Substance P signals from the brain. This substance creates pain. A natural medicine could cause pain relief by nourishing a body organ enough so that the organ heals itself.

If healing herbs in a natural medicine cause a sedative effect and relax muscles, then the pain of tight muscles would be relieved to a large degree. If herbs in a natural medicine increase endorphin production, then you feel good and it's possible that pain relief is only temporary.

Whatever type of pain you have, you're probably looking for pain relief that is permanent. No one likes to suffer needlessly and pain interferes with normal daily living. Millions of people suffer from back and neck pain, headache pain, muscle aches and pains, pain from injuries and pain before and after cancer treatment.

But with natural medicine, there are solutions that could be lasting.
