What Is Poly Cystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS)?

This is a reproductive system disorder that causes disturbances in the menstrual cycle of women.It affects the ability of women to have children.Poly cystic ovarian syndrome also causes excess production of male hormones causing extra hair growth on face and other parts of the body like males and also suffer from sudden outbreak of acne and weight gain.The other names for this ailment are Poly cystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), Sclero cystic Ovarian Disease and Stein-Leventhal Syndrome.Poly cystic ovary syndrome is a health problem which is woman specific affecting about ten percent of women in child bearing age group.It affects women in various ways

The ovaries play a crucial role in the female reproductive system by producing eggs.There are two ovaries situated on either side of uterus.A woman's ovaries store the eggs in small fluid filled sacs called follicles or cysts.

Every month about 20 eggs stored in the cysts start to mature, but usually only one egg reaches full maturity.This single mature egg is released and it travels through the fallopian tube for fertilization.Ovulation occurs when the egg is released from it's fluid filled follicles called sacs or cysts.

Multiple cysts looking like a string of pearls,is the typical sign of poly cystic ovarian syndrome affecting about ten percent of women in the reproductive age group.Generally these cysts are small in size and harmless or non cancerous.These cysts are fluid-filled sacs containing immature eggs that attach to the ovaries and cause no harm or discomfort and usually disappear on their own.

This disorder is such a condition that most women do not even know that they have it.But some of these cysts cause pain and discomfort.These cysts are also known to cause menstrual irregularities in women.Sometimes these cysts cause pain during intercourse,nausea and fever.Large sized cysts may press against the bladder or rectum causing urination or bowel movement problems.

Researchers are yet to find what causes for this disease.Many factors are thought to cause this disorder.Heredity may be a factor here because a woman is likely have it if there is family history.Insulin resistance also thought to be a factor for this disorder.We can say that many factors are involved for poly cystic ovarian syndrome to occur.
