Best Natural Yeast Infection Remedies

By Alma Hanson

Yeast infections are very common. In fact, according to some experts, this problem will affect 75% of all people at sometime in their lives. Contrary to popular belief, it's not something that plagues only women. Men and children are also sometime sufferers and all can benefit by learning about some of the best natural yeast infection remedies.

Although yeast infections can affect many parts of the body, for women, the most common area of affectation is in and around the vagina. Symptoms include soreness and redness, itching and burning. There may also be an accompanying thick discharge of white fluid. These symptoms are caused by excessive amounts of yeast fungi present. Although the body naturally contains bacteria to ward off the yeast growth as part of the immune system, sometimes it's overwhelmed.

At first, you may be inclined to visit your druggist to procure one of the many creams or ointments available for sale over the counter. This may be a mistake. Those products may bring temporary relief to the symptoms but their long-lasting effect might actually prove to be negative on the condition.

Many of the creams and ointments can actually worsen the condition when the infection becomes resistant after repeated use. The infection will sometimes return worse than before. It becomes a never ending cycle.

Yeast grows best in areas that are moist and dark. For babies, the problem appears as a diaper rash. It can also affect a baby's mouth, in the form of dry and chapped lips or sores in the corners of the mouth.

In seniors, the mouth is often affected and a yeast infection is particularly common in those who wear false teeth. It also shows up in skin folds and on feet -- any dark, moist area, really.

Some natural solutions can bring relief and certain preventative measures will go a long way in helping. Yogurt is a good counter-measure. Eating this regularly will provide helpful bacteria that can counteract the growth of yeast cells. Yogurt also is recommended for application to the affected areas in the case of vaginal infection. It is applied directly, using your finger or a plastic applicator. Garlic cloves wrapped in gauze can also be inserted directly into the vaginal canal as an aid. Drinking cranberry juice has long been used as a folk remedy. Also, using a douching solution of 2-3 tablespoons of vinegar per quart of water can bring relief.

Personal cleanliness is paramount in preventing yeast problems. Washing regularly and keeping areas that could be affected clean and dry will help. Rather than using nylon underwear, which can trap moisture, silk and cotton are preferred. And, if you should become a yeast sufferer, consider the above natural yeast infection remedies.
