By Fredia Grossman

Are you trying to learn more about how to select a drug rehab facility? If so, you are probably confused by all of the choices out there. However, in the end you need to avoid the commercials and slick internet and phone book ads. Instead seek the recommendation of a trusted professional who can refer you to a drug rehab facility.

Most rehab centers must be properly accredited and usually offer some sort of twelve step model to recovery. This article will help you better understand each of these factors and avoid the inevitable failure and relapse associated with a rehab program that is not tailored for your needs.

It is difficult and confusing to properly evaluate a drug addiction treatment center with all of the options that are available to you. The internet and phone book are both options that many use, but that is not always the best means of selection. Instead, I recommend that you get a referral from a mental health practitioner or a doctor or spiritual adviser.

These professionals will provide recommendations based upon your best interest and not the promise of financial gain. Even though a good recommendation from a qualified source is advisable, you also need to make sure that your choice of drug rehab centers possesses proper accreditation credentials.

Drug rehab facilities typically need to be accredited to be considered as a serious contender for drug treatment. There are two major accrediting agencies. The first, and most common, is the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Case Organizations (JCAHCO). The second agency is the Commission on Accreditation Of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

An accreditation by either one of these agencies makes the drug rehab facility a viable candidate for consideration. Dual accreditation is even better. But, as important as accreditation is to your selection, you also need to examine the drug abuse facility's approach to group therapy and aftercare.

Standard drug treatment usually involves three phases which are: drug detox, therapy and integration (also called "aftercare"). The detox falls into two standardized approaches: traditional detox and rapid drug detox).

The first of these is the familiar "12 step model" which has been applied to virtually every sort of addiction. The second model is the "12 step alternative treatment program. The traditional 12 step model should be your first choice as it has been proven to be successful with the greatest number of addicts.

Now that you have learned more about how to evaluate a drug rehab facility, you are in a position to make an informed decision. Remember to get the referral of a professional for an accredited drug rehab facility.

Evaluate the facility's approach to treatment, focusing on its approach to therapy and aftercare. Try to find a facility that adheres to the traditional 12 step model. Now that you understand how to properly find a drug treatment center, you need to get up and take action. No one else can get you clean. You have to do it yourself. Stop making excuses and get help now.
