Sleep Disorders - The Harmful Effects

By Edward Neilson

Out of each 24 hour day, it is recommended be experts that you sleep at least a third of the day (8 hours), which is a good chunk of the day. You may think that nothing is happening while you are sleeping, your body is actually doing a lot during that time. If you are suffering from sleep deprivation, then your body can't benefit like it should be.

It is suggested that you get between seven and nine hours of good sleep each night. This allows the body and brain to continue to work at optimum levels. It also allows our brain cells to be revived as well as allows our muscles to rest.

When this process is interrupted it is called sleep deprivation. Some effects of sleep deprivation include a weakened immune system and even memory loss. It can become a serious illness if you continue to be deprived of sleep for a long period of time.

If your immune system is weakened because of a lack of sleep, your body won't be able to combat any viruses you may come in contact with. This, in turn, will cause you to catch the cold or get the flu more often. This could lead to you missing work, which can have a financial strain on you and your family.

You may be wondering how you can tell if you are suffering from sleep deprivation. One telltale sign is if you need frequent naps or you are falling asleep at the wrong times of the day. You may feel that it is just normal, but it may be affecting your body is negative ways.

Keeping a sleep diary will enable you to track how much you are sleeping and how good the sleep is. By keeping track of your sleep this way, you can begin to notice patterns. You are deprived of sleep if you aren't getting the recommended amount each night.

By keeping your bed comfortable, you help your body to stay asleep longer instead of waking up often. By keeping your sheets clean you add to the comfort. If weather permits it, you can try keeping a window open during the night to get some fresh air which is good for your body.

All things considered, if you don't get enough sleep your body will be affected in negative ways. You could try to take pills or medications which can help you to stay asleep at night. Your body's health will thank you if you get enough sleep and aren't sleep deprived.
