How to Properly Choose the Right Lasik Surgeon

By Kevin McClury

As the popularity of Lasik continues to rise, it has become that much harder to choose the right Lasik eye surgeon. This is because the medical community has made Lasik seem so safe (even though there are always potential complications, just like with any other surgery). Because of the complacency that has been created, this article seeks to emphasize the importance of choosing the right surgeon and how to properly do it.

The first thing that you will need to do is contact at least 4 eye surgeons. To identify four Lasik surgeons, ask your family and friends if they have had this procedure done, and if so, who they recommend. If your contacts can not refer anyone, you can resort to either the phone book or an online search to find a surgeon.

Before you actually contact the surgeons office, you are going to want to validate his or her medical credentials. This will be much easier than you think. You simply contact your states Board of Medical examiners and they will be able to validate the surgeon's credentials.

Once you are sure of your Lasik doctors medical credentials, you can visit their office for a consultation. The main deliverable of this visit is to walk out of the office feeling comfortable with the Lasik eye surgeon.

Of course, you are probably wondering what happens at the consultation. This is where the doctor will explain his processes, how he operates, and whether you are even a good candidate for Lasik. Be aware, Lasik is not always the right answer for all vision problems.

Second, the consultation allows you to get a feeling for how the surgeon works. Does he seem genuinely interested in your concerns? Does he explain the possible complications? Or does he make everything just sound too routine?

After your consultation with the surgeons, you will need to decide which surgeon you felt the most comfortable with. This is key. If you are uncomfortable with a surgeon, simply choose another one.

Before we conclude, we have one additional piece of advice. While the surgeons fee structure is important, please do not let it be the only reason you choose a surgeon. If you fail to heed this piece of advice, you may regret it later (in the form of additional surgery or frustration).
